Child of Mediocrity

I am a son of mediocrity.
My father’s friend gave him a throne to keep for him
And it became his
And that of his kin.
For all of my life,
My father is the barracks that still remained
And the institutions he met
Became the soldiers that came and went.

I am a child of nepotism -
I shall soon take a seat that isn’t mind to behold.
And yet, I shall grab and hold
And fight over a right to keep and protect it.
If my father’s dying wish is for me to have it,
I shall honour it as the Bible prescribes.
Thereby continuing the vicious cycle
Of oppression, repression and stagnation.

I am the offspring of tribalism -
Even though my tribe sits at the helms of power,
We struggle amongst ourselves.
There is a camp that doesn’t want me -
So I seek refuge in my father’s cabal.
I can’t die before my turn to govern.
I can’t help it but I have to survive
The obstacles before me, set.

I am the child of mediocrity -
Made to row the rivers of favoritism
And yet, I call it destiny -
For it is my birthright to one day rule this godforsaken country.
Somehow, they believe in me
They hope that I would magically
Make up for my father’s shortcomings -
But the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree.
